KLOVN - Cover up EP [Phil004] - Vinyl Review
Overview:
This three track EP incites exploration and curiosity. The tracks embody a pleasant elixir of sounds who vary enough for excitement but all stay true to a similar theme. All tracks build their own unique swing but don’t peak in energy in a way that demands overt attention, keeping things subtle but groovy.
Extended Review:
A1:
Well weighted kicks plod forward, warming the low ends and building a patient momentum. As the introduction evolves, scattered jazzy keys are bridged fleetingly on half and quarter beats between the opening drum sequence - building some swing and erring the head to nod in a synchronised approval. The subtle lead harmony hiccups around a simple melody that doesn’t take from the song’s structure but incites a growing feeling of exploration. Hi hats gently tick into the song as it breaths with a respiratory rhythm and rising harmonic synth lines accompany the growth energy. The song provides a steady pace and takes low end plodding breakdowns to build a soft but stimulating groove. One to transition well between genres and reverberate those lower frequencies.
B1:
Soft pads give a rising tingle to the introduction of the song as it evolves with cinematic suspense. Zorbing bass frequencies resonate with a fibrous strength and surround the simply structured drum sequence. This one encourages more curiosity and exploration but will still get a lean and bop going while you walk and click your fingers to it.
B2:
Attention grabbing basslines instantly wobble into the limelight of this song, providing some darkness with sprinkles of dappled light as the song progresses. Drums equally soft and rounded compliment the counterpart songs on the EP, but this one has more of a skip and roll to it than the plod of the other tracks. At points the song gives fresh light, almost as if you have arrived at a clearing through the forest, but before long, we are enticed back into the dark woods, allured to find out more. Pleasant breakdowns offer many potentials for creative mix-in’s but also build a steady and atmospheric momentum.
