The Future of Dance Music To Come

Months have passed and you’re finally walking towards that building that for you, means dance music and freedom. The sun beats down on the back of your neck and you can hear the hum of excited conversation drawing closer as you approach the entrance line. The faint, but ceaseless rumbling of a kick drum reverberates its way out from inside; tantalising the ear drums and building rhythmic, deep bellied butterflies in your core. You’ve arrived back at your home away from home… 

For most of us, this is becoming an increasingly distant memory and the question now comes to fruition – Will things have changed?

The scene we are used to is characterised by physical intimacy and freedom – things which currently face reduction and restriction. So, what does this mean for the future of our music scene?

I for one believe strongly in the creativity and ingenuity of dance music culture. Within a week of social distancing restrictions – live streams from bed-room to world class DJ’s were in diverse abundance, across thousands of respected platforms and everyone seemed to be doing their bit to keep delivering the music we all love. People set up donation platforms for artists who were losing their incomes and many did not reclaim ticket refunds from independent clubs who needed this money to stay afloat. It is fair to say, we have been looking out for one another, and support for the scene is high as ever. 

Even if restrictions relax a little, and only small gatherings are allowed, we should have the utmost faith that the creative people behind the events we love will find a way to keep delivering those moments of sonorous unity. If there is one thing we can trust and rely on – it is that dance music is by no means close to fizzling out. All we can do for now is wait patiently for that first beautiful event that unites us all at long last. The day will come when we can hug our friends ecstatically once more, shake our bodies until our hearts are content, and remember that this music scene is something that can never be taken for granted again.

The shape of dance music culture to come may have to take a new temporary form, but our spirits and dedication remain undying - if the energy and soul of the scene we all love is still there – this is all that matters.
